Nestled in the foothills of the Maluti Mountains in the north-eastern Free State, surrounded by sandstone cliffs of the National Park, is where you`ll find an addition to The San Parks Collections - The Brandwag Hotel in the Golden Gate National Park. Accommodation comprises hotel rooms, a suite and chalets. Being in a National Park, Brandwag offers a host of activities and leisure facilities including hiking and nature trails, game viewing and lookout points. Facilities include a restaurant and bar, coffee shop and curio shop. Conference and banqueting facilities cater for up to 150 GUESTS.

The Golden Gate Brandwag Hotel is a unique retreat situated in the heart of the Golden Gate Highlands National Park in the scenic North- Eastern Free State.

Being in the Golden Gate Highlands National Park, the Brandwag Hotel offers the fabulous world of sandstone cliffs, sparkling rivers, age-old culture and heritage and spectacular mountain splendor of the Maluti’s.

Brandwag offers a restaurant, ladies bar, coffee-shop, curio-shop, conferencing & banqueting venues, as well as a variety of indoor and outdoor games and facilities.

Brandwag comprises of accommodation with unequalled views in the self catering chalets and as well as the hotel rooms.

Please note that the Brandwag Hotel will be undergoing extensive upgrading between the 12th of January 2009 and the 31st of March 2010.

During this time none of hotel facilities and restaurant will be available.

Vital Information

Climate

Mild highveld summers with the possibility of thunderstorms in the afternoon and cold winters with occasional snow transforming the park into a white wonderland.

The winter temperatures in Golden Gate can plummet to a mere -9 to -15 degrees C and that snow is a regular occurrence in the park.

Golden Gate primarily falls in a summer rainfall area (Sept to April) and the annual rainfall is approximately 760 mm per year. In very wet years this figure can rise to 1250 mm.

Day Visitors

With a public bypass road running through the park day visitors are welcome to drive through the park.

Fuel Stations: Petrol/ Diesel

Vehicle fuel is available in all parks (or is available on the park periphery):

  • South African legislation stipulates that fuel stations will accept legitimate petrol/fuel/garage/credit/debit cards or cash as a form of payment for any fuel purchase.

Monday to Sunday 07:00 - 17:30.

Tips and Hints

  • Pets are not allowed.
  • Firearms must be declared and sealed on arrival. Seal will be broken at the reception office upon departure.
  • Vehicle repair, medical, post office and police services at Clarens (17 km) or Bethlehem (± 60 km).
  • Remember to bring a hat, walking shoes, sun block, camera, binoculars and wildlife reference books.
  • Hikers on day and overnight trails must always carry sufficient water.
  • Take cool and light clothing for summer and warm clothing for winter.
  • Area prone to sudden weather changes.

**Visitors with reserved accommodation who arrive after 17:30 may collect the keys to their accommodation at the Security Office, Glen Reenen Filling Station.**

Basotho Cultural Village Rest Camp

  • Game viewing drives (self driven) – it is not only the game that one get to enjoy in this part of the world, one gets to enjoy rock formation, birds, grassland and the beautiful scenery that forms part of the Drakensberg and Maluti mountains.
  • Museum tours – visitors get to feel the Basotho experience by tasting traditional cuisine, getting to know equipments and weapons that were used then.
  • Cultural route, one gets afforded an opportunity to be taken through the Basotho culture and the way of living dating back from the sixteen century to date.
  • Herbal trail, visitors are lead through this trail in order to be educated about the medicines that were used and are still by the African Traditional Healers.

Directions

Travel / How to get there Equidistant from Johannesburg, Durban and Bloemfontein. Easily accessible via excellent tarred road. Public road runs through the park. Roads in the park are tarred. From Johannesburg: Take the N3 to Villiers. Go through one toll gate. Continue past the Villiers/ Vereeniging turn-off, cross the Vaal River. .Soon after the Engen One Stop, turn off at the Villiers/Frankfort off ramp (47 km from the first toll gate) Note: if you go through a second toll gate, you have gone too far! Turn right at the top of the off-ramp and cross over the highway towards Frankfort (R26) 30 kms from turn-off turn right at the T-Junction (R26) 7 kms from T-Junction turn left at Reitz/Bethlehem direction sign (still R26). 58 kms from turn, you by-pass Reitz en route to Bethlehem. 53 kms from Reitz, you reach Bethlehem. Continue straight through Bethlehem, past Wimpy, Mr Price, etc. 7 kms from Bethlehem, turn right towards Clarens. From Clarens take the R712 to Puthaditjaba. Travel 22kms to the Golden Gate National Park. From Durban Take the N3 towards Harrismith. Just after the Estcourt North Off ramp, see the Shell Ultra city and take exit 194. Turn left to Winterton/Bergville onto the R74. Travel through Winterton and Bergville, up the Oliviershoek pass Pass Sterkfontein Dam on the Left. Turn left onto the R712, see "Puthaditjaba" signs. Travel 33km, pass the Puthaditjaba turn off and continue on the R712 for a further 56km to Golden Gate National Park. From Bloemfontein: Take the N5 to Bethlehem. Continue straight through Bethlehem, past Wimpy, Mr Price, etc. Continue on the N5 towards Harrismith/Kestell. 7 kms from Bethlehem, turn right towards Clarens. From Clarens take the R712 to Puthaditjaba. Travel 22kms to the Golden Gate National Park.
