Midmar Valley Nature Reserve

Midmar Nature Reserve is situated only a few kilometres from Howick. The climate is warm and tropical, as is most of KwaZulu-Natal. The Midmar Dam / Nature Reserve is most famous for the Midmar Mile event but also hosts a lovely little game reserve and water sports.

Midmar is a game park that has rare red hartebeest, black wildebeest, blesbok, springbok, reedbuck, oribi and zebra grazing on lush grasses. The activities are wide and varied including tennis and swimming in the pool and dam. There is also cycling, windsurfing, canoeing and yachting and excellent freshwater fishing with carp, bass, scalies and bluegill to be caught. 

Midmar hosts the Annual Midmar Mile which is the largest open water swimming event in the world as well as a large number of provincial and National Triathlons and sailing events. The Henley Midmar Yacht club has organised races on most weekends and has  excellent facilities for the sailing faternity.
