Sentinel Peak

Sentinel peak offer the easiest access to the top of the Drakensberg escarpmet. The Tugela Falls from the top of the Amphitheatre is possibly the highlight of any trip to the Drakensberg. The spectaclarly beautifull mountain hiking trail to the top of Mount-Aux-Sources starts at the Sentinel Peak car park at Witsieshoek via Phuthadjhaba from where it is a relatively short climb to the top of the Amphiteare. (About 5 hours return)

Via two chain ladders you can can gain easy access to the summit. This is the only day hiking trail which will take you to the top of the Drakensberg escarpment as a reasonable day hike.

Accommodation near Sentinel Peak

(There is no really good accommodation options near to the Sentinel Peak. There is very basic hiker accommodation at the Sentinel Peak Guards Hut. Witzieshoek Mountain Resort offers overpriced accommodation at a low standard.)

• Vergezient Mountain Retreat - Northern Drakensberg accommodation overlooking Royal Natal National Park and the Amphitheatre. Also good base for the Sentinel Peak hike.

Hiking Trails at Sentinel Peak

• Sentinel Peak car park to the top of the amphitheatre via the chain ladder. 5 hour return hike. This is the only day hiking trail that will get you to the top of the Drakensberg escarpment in a reasonable day.
